If you’ve lost the motivation to exercise while in coronavirus isolation, just take some inspiration from Joan MacDonald.

On her social media page, Joan posts countless videos and photos demonstrating impressive moves from bicep curls with heavy weights to hip thrusts.
She also regularly shares fitness and diet tips, which she has learnt from her coach and daughter Michelle MacDonald, and explains how she has mentally and physically become stronger over the years.
For example, in a recent post Joan reflects on her personal fitness journey and addresses the importance of “gym style” as a motivating factor.
“When I first started out on my transformation journey, I hated trying on clothes, and in fact most of my clothes barely fit me any more so I had just a few bottoms and tops to choose from. Baggy shorts and over-sized t-shirts in boring colors were my go-to,” the 74-year-old captioned an impressive before-and-after photo with.
“I didn’t love myself back then and that’s how I dressed myself. I used to think 1) I didn’t deserve beautiful clothes and 2) nothing nice would fit me anyway, especially at my age.”
It wasn’t until her daughter took her shopping for gym clothes that she felt motivated to workout.
“When I saw myself in flattering clothes in cute colors, I could see that my inner dialogue had to go,” I actually had muscles! I actually had a good shape taking form! I felt so good inside to see that in those new clothes,” she continued.
“Even though it might seem like something superficial like clothing can’t have a big impact on how we see ourselves it absolutely can my dears! If I can learn that lesson in my seventies you can too. Now you won’t catch me heading to the gym (or my living room as the case may be) without taking the time to choose a favorite outfit.”
Joan is also no stranger to posting regular bikini photos as a means to promote body positivity.
“The joys of trying on a bikini in a regular gal’s shop and it fits! I will never take my health for granted again,” she captioned a video of her modelling in a swimsuit and robe.
“My beauties, if a gal in her 70s can do it, so can you! Let’s all take life by the lapels and say, ‘I’m with you kid!’”
She believes the key to achieving any health goal is by prioritising self-worth and compassion rather than focusing on a number on the scale. And TBH, we couldn’t agree more.
